UNDISCOVERED exclusive interview with Jason about his youth.
At what age did you know that being in the music business was what you wanted to do with your life?
I was really very young when I knew music was what I wanted to do. I got my first guitar for my 4th birthday and I’ve been playing it ever since. But it wasn’t until I was 11 that I started singing and dabbling in song writing. It was actually one of my school teachers that inspired me, she used to write music before she became a teacher and she helped me to write my first song. I was 11 so its not amazing but I suppose it’s the root of my career, so it can’t be that terrible.
What were you doing before you got discovered?
I had been through school and sixth from at an academy in my home town in Glasgow. I knew I didn’t want to go straight into a 9-5 office job and was determined to do something in the music industry, so I went to Glasgow university and studied music wrote a few songs and focused on my sound. I also got a part time job working in a supermarket near home to pay for my university fees. I also booked studio time at lofti studios, a small recording studio in Glasgow. I worked on my music there in my spare time to create demos and just to blow off steam really. So I haven’t really done much with my life before I was signed me to dirty hit records.
How does it feel being signed to the same record label as the 1975?
Words can’t even describe it. I mean I love the likes of Beyoncé and Coldplay and other mainstream pop, but I’m a massive fan of the 1975. Matt Healy was actually in the recording studio the day I went in to meet with the producers, I couldn’t believe it. He actually helped with the song I was writing at the time and he said he would love to work with me. You never know there could be a Jason Perry-The 1975 collaboration coming soon.
