Exclusive interview with Jason Perry- double page spread

Exclusive interview edited

This is my double page spread continued, below is the exclusive interview with Jason Perry, the singer songwriter i am going to use in my magazine.

At what age did you know that being in the music business was what you wanted to do with your life?

I was really very young when I knew music was what I wanted to do. I got my first guitar for my 4th birthday and I’ve been playing it ever since. But it wasn’t until I was 11 that I started singing and dabbling in song writing. It was actually one of my school teachers that inspired me, she used to write music before she became a teacher and she helped me to write my first song. I was 11 so it’s not amazing but I suppose it’s the root of my career, so it can’t be that terrible.

What were you doing before you got discovered?

I had been through school and sixth from at an academy in my home town in Glasgow. I knew I didn’t want to go straight into a 9-5 office job and was determined to do something in the music industry, so I went to Glasgow University and studied music wrote a few songs and focused on my sound. I also got a part time job working in a supermarket near home to pay for my university fees. I also booked studio time at lofti studios, a small recording studio in Glasgow. I worked on my music there in my spare time to create demos and just to blow off steam really. So I haven’t really done much with my life before I was signed me to dirty hit records.

How does it feel being signed to the same record label as the 1975?

Words can’t even describe it. I mean I love the likes of BeyoncĂ© and Coldplay and other mainstream pop, but I’m a massive fan of the 1975. Matt Healy was actually in the recording studio the day I went in to meet with the producers, I couldn’t believe it. He actually helped with the song I was writing at the time and he said he would love to work with me. You never know there could be a Jason Perry-The 1975 collaboration coming soon.

Double page spread article

Double page spread article

I took some photos in Glasgow to use on my double page spread and wrote my article about my artist Jason Perry, which is the stage name for the model I chose. My story is about a busker who made his fame from You Tube after being discovered. The article includes an exclusive interview from Jason himself.

This is my model playing Jason Perry. He is a busker from Glasgow, he is stood outside Buchanan galleries shopping centre in the shot which is where I based my article, this made my article more authentic as the background is the area I mention in the story.

This is the article so far.

New up and coming artist Jason Perry begins his career busking on the streets of Glasgow. Jason uploaded YouTube videos of himself playing the guitar at home, then moved on to Buchanan Street, Glasgow. Passers-by on the busy commercial street quickly became fans of his work, taking videos of the young artist and uploading them to Facebook and YouTube themselves. Jason became an overnight success with his videos going viral getting over 10million views in a matter of 48 hours. The 24-year-old vocalist and musician has been a celebrity for less than a month and already has the wheels in motion for his debut album, featuring his new single ‘the fall’ released 16th February 2016. Subscribe to Jason Perry’s official YouTube channel to see his pre fame videos and for the release of his new music video ‘the fall’
UNDISCOVERED exclusive interview with Jason about his youth.
I have posted the interview on a seperate blog. Enjoy.

I went to Glasgow over the weekend and took some photos of a busker to use in my magazine. Don’t worry, I did ask his permissions first and gave him some money. But here are some of the shots I took of him and the surrounding area.

My Plan

My Music Magazine

This is a list I created to generate ideas for my music magazine name, cover story ideas, photos I could take and use and ideas for my double page spread story.

Contents Page Analysis 5

I have analysed a contents page from NME magazine. I have outlined major magazine features such as the Masthead, the colour schemes, the images and the layout of this contents page. I will be copying a similar idea of this contents page however, not making it the same. There is plug at the bottom advertising Muse. This is mentioning their name but not showing a photo suggesting they are well known enough to be recognised without needing a matching image.

I have analysed a contents page from NME magazine. I have outlined major magazine features such as the Masthead, the colour schemes, the main image and the layout of this contents page. I won’t be copying the idea of this contents page as I feel it doesn't fit with the style of Indie magazine I have created with flowers and nature; this is more of an Indie Rock contents page. However, there is an advert at the bottom to get people to buy subscriptions of the magazine; although I won’t be offering subscriptions I may use the idea of the plug at the bottom to advertise something else such as a gig or festival.

I have analysed a contents page from NME magazine. I have outlined major magazine features such as the Masthead, the colour schemes and the context of the pose of the featured artists and the layout of this contents page. I plan on replicating this layout for my own music magazine as I like the idea of having different sized photos emphasising the importance of some stories and including a variety of images to foreshadow the magazines contents. I like the ‘plus’ bar at the bottom of the page showing various things included in the magazine without having an image attached this could be to show the less important and featured information in the magazine while still including it for the readers benefit.

I have analysed a contents page from MOJO magazine. I have outlined major magazine features such as the Masthead, the colour schemes and the context of the pose of the featured artist and the mise en scene including his outfit. He is stood up in the image and it is a high angled shot looking down on him, this could be to show the audience looking down on the page to make him look more 3D off the page. I don’t plan on using this layout for my own music magazine as I want to include multiple photographs to show various artists I have featured in my magazine.

I have analysed a double page spread from NME magazine featuring Lily Allen. I have outlined major magazine features such as the format, Masthead, the colour schemes and the article itself. I don’t plan on copying this style for my own music magazine as it is not very conventional. The masthead is too big and jumbled and unconventional for me to use in my magazine.

I have analysed a double page spread from Q magazine featuring Cheryl Cole. I have outlined major magazine features such as the Masthead, the colour schemes and the giant drop capital used. I plan on using a similar format for my own music magazine as it is quite conventional, however rather than using the right page for the image I would use the left and instead of using the left page for the text I will use the right.  I plan on using another photograph at the bottom of my article to fill more space just like this one.

I have analysed a double page spread from NME magazine featuring the teenagers. I have outlined major magazine features such as the Masthead, the colour schemes and the context of the group pose. They are sat in the middle of a sofa in a messy room, there are 2 text columns. I plan on using a similar layout for my own music magazine as it is quite conventional, dedicating the left page of my double page spread to a large image of my featured artist and writing the actual article on the right page. However, I do not plan on having the column at the side featuring other artists as I want to dedicate the whole of my double page spread to the artist I am featuring.

I have analysed a double page spread from Mayhem magazine featuring Rita Ora. I have outlined major magazine features such as the Masthead, the colour schemes and the context of her pose. She is sat in the middle of the page and is an extremely large photograph, with 2 text columns. I do not plan on using this layout for my own music magazine as it is not very conventional, I plan on dedicating the left page of my double page spread to a large image of my featured artist and writing the actual article on the right page.

Double page spread analysis 1

NME magazine double page spread analysis

I have analysed this double page spread of indie pop singer Lana Del Rey. I have identified the minimalistic structure of the article and photograph as well as other features such as the statistics box and the font.
I plan to use a similar layout for my music magazine, using the full left page for an image of my model and the right hand page for my article. I want to use Lana Del Rey’s style for my model and try to replicate her ideals. I plan to do this by dressing my model in clothes similar to her and portraying a similar attitude as Lana does.

She is confident and cheeky and plays on the ideas of a twisted princess. She is both girly and grimy. I want to try using this theme for my models in my magazine.

Front cover analysis 5

Q magazine front cover analysis

I have analysed this front cover of Adele outlining major features of a magazine cover such as the mast head and the plug. The colour scheme is quite varied on this cover having a coloured photo, a red and white logo and black, white and red subheadings on the page. This is quite contrasting and eye catching so I would like to try and replicate this style on my magazine

Elle

Front cover analysis 4

NME front cover analysis featuring Jake Bugg

I have analysed and annotated the front cover of NME magazine featuring Jake Bugg. This front cover features a male artist and I have used this to compare with the other magazines that feature female artists in order to portray the gender differences that depend on the artist. I have found that the female artists are much more stylised and work more on sex appeal than the male models. This could reference to gender stereotypes and the androcentric society we live in today.
Jake Bugg is dressed in a Fred Perry jacket and is accessorised plainly. He is seen holding a pint glass of a non-alcoholic beverage, this coveys the magazine and the artist himself in a positive light rather than a negative one, especially when younger and more impressionable fans are concerned.

I am not planning to use a male model as one of my main artists in my magazine however I do plan on using some photographs of a male artist on my contents page. I plan to dress my male artist in a plain jacket like Jake Bugg’s. the colour scheme of this cover is also monochrome, I would like to use this colouring on my front cover however I don’t plan to use it on my photograph of my male model.

Front cover analysis 3

MOJO magazine front cover analysis

I have analysed a front cover of MOJO magazine featuring Madonna. I have outlined major magazine features such as the Masthead, the colour schemes and the context of her poses. Her pose with her mouth open and the cross accessory mimicking a religious relic plays with the belief in god and the contact with Satan. The word confessions is on the cover page which implies that she has done wrong. The licking of the cross could depict the mocking of god rather than the worshiping of him and could suggest she is working with the devil but only pretending to be good and pure. This image plays with sex appeal in a different way to nudity. It works on implications and connotations rather than what meets the eye.
I am planning to use the monochrome colour scheme on my magazine front cover sticking to the indie genre. And I prefer the idea of implied sex appeal rather than outright sex appeal however this would be difficult to capture in my own way and may not be suitable for the images and style ideals of my models and created artists, therefore I will not be using this in my own magazine creation.

Front cover analysis 2

INDIE magazine front cover analysis

I have analysed this front cover of INDIE style magazine to compare the fashion with other magazines primarily focused on music.
On this front cover I have identified the features of the models makeup, clothing and hair based on the genre conventions.
The hair and accessories on this front cover do not fit with the theme I am trying to put across therefore I wont be using them in my magazine however, I plan to base some of my models makeup on this magazine. The makeup is feminine and plain so the model can still be identified and is not dehumanized. I like the idea of dressing the model in accessories and clothing to suit my genre and my theme but using makeup where the model can still be identified.

Front cover analysis 1

Rolling Stones magazine front cover analysis

I have analysed a front cover of Rolling Stone magazine featuring Lana Del Rey. I have outlined major magazine features such as the Masthead, the colour schemes and the context of her poses. Her pose with her mouth open wearing a swim suit uses sex appeal. She is barely dresses showing a lot of skin in the major areas chest, arms and legs. The colour scheme is also monochrome which I am planning to use on my magazine front cover sticking to the indie genre.
